Fuel Transfer Pumps for Drums: Hand, 12 Volt and FM Approved
Moving diesel or gasoline out of a drum or farm tank is one of the most common pumping jobs, and one of the easiest to get wrong. The right pump depends on whether you have power, how fast you need to move fuel, and whether the liquid is flammable.
Which fuel pump do you need?
No power available: a double diaphragm hand pump. Double Diaphragm Fuel Transfer Pump (DD-8a) moves about 1 gallon per 5 strokes and handles gasoline, diesel, fuel oil and motor oil.
Fueling equipment on the go: a pump that runs off a vehicle battery. 12 Volt Fuel Transfer Pump (ECO-8) moves 8 GPM.
Flammables in a plant or warehouse: choose an FM approved pump. FM Approved 3 Vane Rotary Fuel Pump (FM81) includes an anti-static hose, flame arrestor and vacuum breaker.
Diesel, kerosene and oils, low volume: Lever Action Barrel Pump (44100) is an inexpensive choice.
Safety basics
Bond and ground drums when transferring flammable liquids to prevent static sparks.
Check that the pump is rated for the exact fuel. Not every diesel pump is rated for gasoline.
Use a pump with a flame arrestor wherever your insurer or fire code requires FM approved equipment.
